I take for granted often how fleeting these services are. Whether they go out of business, get acquired, or simply change their feature set, any service you trust to hold your data is possibly temporary. The only real way to secure future access to your important moments is to keep them yourself, or at least back them up in a way you’ll be able to continue accessing.

Download “Momento” from the app store. Import ur entire Gowalla history. Use the app to create a backup. Then leave the Gowalla service and continue on your merry way with Foursquare and never worry about losing another shred of data. Problem solved.

I used Gowalla for a long time for the same reasons you gave. I ultimately switched because I felt the check-in process was more lightweight in Foursquare. It’s sad to see that most of the Gowalla users I know no longer have use for it.

Does Gowalla have an API or something you could use to take a copy of your data? I’m a Foursquare user myself, and love how useful it is for finding some place to go when I’m on unfamiliar ground. Plus there’s the collection aspect, with badges.

As much as I usually dislike the practice, this is the reason I started using their multi-checkin feature to checkin on Foursquare and Facebook. At least some of my checkins were preserved on Foursquare. :\
